    Default Youth deer rifles

I saw an older Rem. Model 7 youth in .260 a few days ago..Well built, smooth action, light, short, balanced and NOT FOR SALE.....Long story short I think it would make an excellent addition to my stash.I was hoping to get Gage into the 22-250 I'm refinishing but it will be a little long and heavy, and he's a far cry from fitting into my .25-06 or .257Al
And though I wouldnt hesittate to use my .218 Bee for deer, I dont relish the idea of putting it in the hands of a kid for big game....Do I make the investment on a youth rifle for the boy or see If I can make him comfortable in what I got?

Invest in kids and they get a lifetime of expierence. Still remember the first hunting gun I recieved from my dad.

I think trying to fit them into something not right for them will make for less of an enjoyable experience....as much as it is difficult to purchase a firearm that will only be used for a few years, you can always pass it on to grandkids and right on down the line.

    Yep.

Get one of the hardwood stocked youth 7, 77, or 700s, cut and pad the stock to fit, and after the mature to full-size, a simple restock to a full-length stock keeps them in business with thge same rifle.

The .260 is a fanastic hunting round.

You could not do much better, all around, and could do FAR worse.

Did a Model Seven 260 Ute for my son. It's still here and will be his sisters next. It's a tough little package to beat for kid's rifle.

I got my wife a model 7 in 7mm08. What a sweet gun. I've been tempted to steel it on occasion when I don't feel like toteing mine.

Yeah I agree with the above comments. I think you would be doing you boy fine putting him a 260 or a 7mm-08. I would hesitate about a 22-250 (for deer). Same idea as starting a youngster with a 410 shotgun. Yeah it works, but it more of an "experts" gun than a kids gun.

You might also consider a Ruger Compact, nice little rifle. Also to be considered is the size of the kid. Mossberg makes a 100 atr Youth rifle that has a spacer in the stock which can be removed and then replaced as the kid gets bigger. They sell a complete package with a 3x9x40 scope for 399.00 Both these rifles are available in most of the short action calibers.

Only if you want to run the risk of your kid sporting a bolt through the face. I'd not be given a Mossberg, thank you, and likely kick the arse of anyone who tried to give my kid the same. Hamstring the kid from the get go, and they'll cuss you later. If you're going to do it, do it right the first time out the gate.

coalbed...how big is your boy? Are you thinking of a gun for mentored hunting or regular 12 year deer hunting? What about the good old Winchester Model 94 in 30-30? Those carbines are a good size for many 12 year olds.

I started with a Model 94 when I was 12 and killed a pile of deer with it. I was never a little boy though, always was a strapping young lad.

Of course now you maybe forced into a Marlin, which I think they are much better now then they were many years ago.

Wow! Strong opinion! My first gun I bought was a mossy in 308 that I still shoot on regular basis. I am not a bench expert, but would love to see how tight it would still shoot now with hand loads. After teaching my son with his grandpa's 300 savage model 99, the better the fit the more he'll git. I have since fell in love with Rem 700's in left hand. I want one in 7mm08. My Grand kids are having left handed tendencies! If the gun fits close I think that you should try to stay with the lighter 30 cals. And as far as the carbines, I never understood them for kids. Light=kick and before the bar safety they were scarey in most kids hands. IMHO

Coalbed I have a model seven in .243 and love it, bought it years ago just incase I ever had kids and now I'm glad I have it, shoots sweet very little kick and I have used it often and taken more than a few deer with it. Seems to me that caliber is more availiable in the gun stores when I'm nibbing around. I gotta try a tsx bullet in it and maybe I'll be using it instead of the 06!
