Default Picking up my first pistol on Monday!

Monday morning I am headed to pick up my first pistol. Its a walther p22 22lr. I got a great deal on it. Its only had one clip run through it. The guy sold it to me for 250. The same gun is 450 new at Gander Mountain. I wanted to go for a 22 for my first gun because its cheap and easy to shoot. It was hard for me to pass up the deal. I am looking forward to putting some rounds down range with it. I have read alot of good reviews on the gun. Its the model with the 5" barrel. Here is a pic of what she looks like.

My Glock 26 was listed for $600 at GM and sold for $500 brand new everywhere local... so they wouldn't be the first place I'd go

Anyway sounds like a good purchase. I want to get a .22 soon, just because shooting 9mm every week at the range gets expensive, it'd be nice to divide that time up with a .22 (plus fun to have something else to shoot).

Let us know how you like it!

Walther makes a good gun so now the collection begins. As far as .22's go, the Ruger MK III is a good one to look at, as is the Browning Buckmark. Smith and Wesson makes the Model 22 as far as new production but if you could find a K-22 or a Model 17 revolver, now that is a shooter....I will be adding a S&W K-22 to my collection.....someday.

I bought my girl friend that same gun last year and it's been a good gun. She has put quite a few rounds down range with several brands of ammo and so far not one problem. You may want to check the serial # on yours, many of the P22's that were made in the first several years of production had BAD Jamming problems. You can find out more info on bad serial #'s on rimfire.com

I have a 75 SA and love it. If I was to do it all over again I might have gotten the 85 though. The SP-O1 is on my short list. I want the Shadow version and I want to get it already tricked out by Ghost products inc. Here's a link http://czcustom.com/CZ75_SP01_SHADOW_CustomShop.aspx

Congrats! Very sound decision starting out with 22 cal. So many make the mistake of purchasing that really cool pistol they see on the movies. Pistol shooting is definitely a skill that requires effort to master. Learning on a 22 will greatly decrease your chances of devloping poor shooting habits that come from overgunning your learning curve.

The little Walthers are just fun.

Gander Mountain is routinely one of the most overpriced places anywhere, with stock that's beat to heck, and sales staff that's beyond clueless. Good to go fondle new stuff, but the LAST place to normally buy. That said, I got a SCREAMING deal on a Remington Model 25 pump, .25-20, there last year, simply because they had no clue what they had.

WW; we'll talk. Again. No flies on the CZs.

I understand about gander beleive me. But I have found that the mainstream price for this gun is 400-450. Still 250 is a good deal. I really look forward to getting the gun and giving it a try.

$250 is an excellent deal on the little Walther.

Make sure you strip it down and give it a good cleaning.

They can be finicky on what ammo they like/don't like. If you get failures to feed or eject, strip down and clean, then if that fails, do so again and shift ammunition. When you find what it likes, DO NOT VARY from that brand or design.

Sound advice that applies to any .22 but is especially evident in semi autos...

I have a Beretta U-22 Neos myself. Functions well for a reasonable price and is extremely accurate.

when cleaning that gun, like most semi autos, don't over oil it. Hit the high spots, you'll see them, they will all be shiney. Oil draws dirt, dust, gunpowder and other things and may bind up the slide and cause feeding problems when used in excess. 1 drop to each spot. Use a good lubricating oil. We here at work use Hoppes moly oil on our moving parts and it works excellent.

Thanks Den, I was actually going to ask you about cleaning. I dont have any experience cleaning pistols. I noticed alot of grease inside when i took it apart. Should I clean all the grease out of it and reapply or no grease at all? Like I said I have no experience any input is appreciated.

Gunslick was a popular grease at one time intended for autos and moving parts. You won't see that recommended much these days. Modern method is to keep them spotless. Some use a graphite based powder. That was quite common on target pistols when I used to compete at the range. We called it "graph filth" instead of graphite. Those guns never saw weather so corrosion was not really an issue. Some preservatives go on like oil, but then dry leaving a microfilm dry lubricant/non-corrosive barrier. These are best in my opinion.

clean every bit of that grease, gunk that you can get to. Get it down to the spotless bare metal. In armorer school we are taught to apply one drop to any friction areas...the shiney ones....That is the Beretta armorers course, but I can't imagine it would be any different for a Sig, which by the way I will be going to armorer school in the near future, Ruger or any semi....your Walther included. Some oils and grease actually will draw moisture. Most will draw dirt, sand, dust ect....Bore Butter is a perfect example. Get a good Moly oil and apply 1 drop to friction areas. On the Glock, we always put a drop in the grooves on the slide. On the M-9 we put a drop down the hammer and the trigger. Your owners manual should highlight any place that lube is necessary.
